Lee-on-the-SolentInfant and Nursery School

LEAP to success at Lee!

Governors

Are you interested in becoming a school governor?

Welcome from the Governors of Lee-on-the-Solent Infant and Nursery School

Please find below details of how our governing body is structured, what our roles and responsibilities are and the names and terms of appointment for each Governor.

The governing body of the school works with the Headteacher to ensure that all children are given the best opportunities while in our school.  The governors work to ensure there is strategic leadership, robust accountability and good oversight of the school’s educational and financial performance.

Governors visit the school regularly, examine progress and attainment data, review the school budget and make sure the school is working towards its current objectives in the School Improvement Plan (SIP).

The full governing body (FGB) meet at least twice per term. Responsibility for specific areas is delegated to committees or individual governors. Governor committees include Headteacher Performance Management, Pay Committee, Resources Committee and Curriculum Committee.

Governors are recruited from the parents of children in our school, and from the wider community.  We aim to have a broad range of expertise, skills, and experience among the governing body, so that together we can support and challenge the school.  Governors attend training to up to date with current legislation around governance.

The role of the governors is strictly strategic, and the day-to-day management of the school is entrusted to the Headteacher and the school’s Senior Leadership Team. However, the governors are keen to be involved in the life of the school and are often in attendance at school events.

If you are interested in investing in your child’s education by joining the governors, the Chair of Governors would be glad to speak with you about the role in greater depth. You can contact the Chair via the school office.

We would also encourage you to support the school and your children’s education in other ways. Attending events or becoming involved with FLINS (Friends of Lee-on-the-Solent Infant and Nursery School) will help to model being Part of the Community, one of our LEAP Values.

MEET THE GOVERNORS

Paul Chamberlain

Chair of Governors

I’m Paul Chamberlain, the local vicar. I’m the Chair of Governors at the Infant School, and an Associate Governor at the Junior School! I’m on both governing bodies as part of a plan to help the schools work more closely together, part of which has a governor from each school being an Associate Governor at the other. I’ve been a school governor in Lee for over four years. I’m a governor because I want the children of our town to have the best education they can, and governors play an important role in helping our schools make this happen.

Glen O’Nion

Associate Governor

I’m Glen O’Nion and have 2 children that go to the school. I’m a parent governor but specialise in finance. I’m chair of the resources committee and a member of the FGB. The lee-on-the-Solent community means the world to me so I’m keen to help the children get the best possible start to their lives in this great town

Jo Drew

SEND Governor

I am Jo Drew.  I moved into the area in 2017 after living in London for 40 years. I have been a Governor since March 2018 and I am a member of the Resources and Pay Committees. I think that a good education gives children the best start in life and that school governors have a vital role to play in that education.

David Hill

Parent Governor

I became a governor in 2020 at both the Infant and Junior schools, as a parent to children in the schools. I currently train primary teachers at the University of Portsmouth, having previously been a primary teacher myself. I was pleased that as a governor, there is the opportunity to help support the school in ensuring all children there get the best opportunities to learn and develop.

Nicola Veck

Parent Governor

Hi I'm Nicola Veck. I became a Parent Governor at Lee-on-the-Solent Infants because of my fundamental belief that access to a secure, safe and high standard of education opens a world of opportunities for all our children. I wanted to be a Governor as I acknowledge the important role we have in making the school the best it can and should be. I work in Safeguarding and I am keen to ensure that, in addition to excellent standards in the learning provided to children, an impeccable standard of safeguarding is maintained at Lee-on-the-Solent Infants.

Caroline Osborne

Parent Governor

I am a mum to three children, my two youngest attend the school and my eldest has been through the school and is now at the juniors. I have a varied background ranging from training as a teacher and working in SEND schools to working in accounts. I currently work for an organisation within the democracy sector. My children, like others in our community, have benefited from the best possible start in their education. I joined the governors to help ensure the school continues to serve our community and ensure children get a wonderful start to their schooling.

Wayne Veck

Co-opted Governor

Hello, I’m Wayne Veck. I became a governor during the summer of 2021 with the aim of supporting the school in providing an outstanding education for the children of Lee-on-the-Solent. I am particularly interested in promoting the education and wellbeing of children with disabilities, drawing on my professional experiences of teaching and researching in special education and inclusion and in the Faculty of Education at the University of Winchester.

Jane Read

Co-opted Governor

Hi! I’m Jane – I am a grandmother whose three children all attended the Lee schools in the past.
Since June 2021 I worked as Clerk to Governors of Lee-on-the-Solent Infant and Nursery School.

As time went on I felt that I would prefer to switch my role and help the school and community from a voluntary and more hands-on perspective. I have lived in both Lee-on-Solent and Stubbington for
over 40 years during which time I worked for several local businesses; now that I am retired I have
the opportunity to come into school and carry out my duties as a Governor. It is a privilege to be
part of the team and supporting the next generation as they grow.
